THE DISCOUNT TEST

June 2012.
After months of trying, failing, and coming to terms with not being the next wonderkid of advertising, I was still an intern.

I remember that morning very clearly. At my desk, I was checking sports news. My friend Deniz, also an intern, came over and congratulated me on the Cannes shortlist. I gave him a fake laugh and went back to the article. It was a lame joke.

I mean, I knew they had submitted my radio campaign to the festival, but I had zero expectations.

Then a few more people stopped by to say the same. It wasn’t a joke. I was actually shortlisted. At Cannes.

The shortlist didn’t turn into an award, but it was more than enough for me. Apparently, for the agency too. Because a month later, I was finally, officially, a copywriter.

Now, years later, when I listen to the spots again, I still find them quite witty. In the end, they are my first children.
